Highland Games
A truly memorable experience, giving you a full flavour of Scotland's traditions and past can be had by visiting Highland Games during your stay. You may even be tempted to take part in some of the competitions as entry is open to all and most games also have several events suitable for children. The "Games" are often a focus of community action and help to maintain a cohesive society in many of Scotland's villages and towns.
Events include the traditional tossing the caber ( where the objective is not to achieve distance but to rotate the caber and have it lying as close to 12 o'clock as possible!), Piping and Highland Dancing. Witnessing the gargantuan efforts put in by the tug of war teams is exhausting in itself. These events are held throughout the summer, most often at weekends, and even occasionally during midweek or the evenings. To help you plan to attend we have listed an alphabetical list of Games below with contact details
Where 2007 dates are given it is possible to "guestimate the 2008 date e.g. the xxx games are traditionally held on the first or third Saturday of the month
