The Great Loch Earn Boat Race
A splendid fun filled event with competitors, participants and spectators having great sport while raising significant funds for charity takes place each year in Spring and covers the length of Loch Earn. This splendid event has raised some £65,00 for charity since it started some 9 years ago with the crews nominating their own charity for sponsorship.
In the latest Loch Earn challenge, 22 teams of 4 crew took to the water on Sunday the 29th April 2007, a day when a strong head winds on Loch Earn made conditions difficult for the rowers. Crieff Round table , who organize the event , decided to shorten the course by about 1.5 miles to allow all competitors a better chance to finish the race.
The winning team from Dunning, with a crew of Bruce Spalding, Raymond Holt, Jim Thomson and Andrew Willards, completed the shortened Loch Earn course in 1 hour 48 minutes and raised some £500 for Kinross Young Carers. Winning is becoming a habit for this team and this was their third successive win.
The decision to shorten the race proved to be the right one as the final crew crossed the line in 4 hours and 53 minutes: any longer a course would have made Loch Earn too challenging for them in the prevailing conditions. This year over £7,000 was raised for good causes.
